Cognitive Shuffling: The Random-Word Trick for a Busy Brain

Pick a word. Any neutral word, five letters or longer. Now, for each letter, picture something unrelated that starts with it. That's most of what cognitive shuffling is. It sounds too simple to be a real sleep technique, and that simplicity is exactly the point. The brain struggles to fall asleep while it's still solving problems or following a story. Cognitive shuffling gives it neither. Just a string of disconnected images, one after another, until there's nothing left to hold onto and sleep arrives on its own.

The technique comes from Canadian cognitive scientist Luc P. Beaudoin, who published his first paper on what he called serial diverse imagining in 2013. His idea was straightforward: intrusive, goal-directed thinking, the kind that keeps replaying an argument or planning tomorrow, is the opposite of the loose, fragmented thought pattern that shows up naturally as people drift into sleep. Rather than trying to relax the mind into that state, cognitive shuffling tries to imitate it directly.

What Cognitive Shuffling Actually Is

The name comes from what it does to a coherent train of thought: it shuffles it. Ordinary bedtime thinking follows threads, one worry leads to another, a memory pulls in a related memory, and each thread keeps the brain awake and working. Cognitive shuffling deliberately breaks those threads by moving from one unrelated image to the next every few seconds, so no single idea has time to develop into something that demands attention.

This is a different mechanism from counting sheep, which uses a single repeated image and tends to get boring fast, or from meditation, which usually asks for stillness and focus rather than active image-generation. Beaudoin's model treats the constant, low-effort switching as the active ingredient. The mind is busy, just not busy with anything that matters.

How to Do It, Step by Step

Start with a neutral cue word, at least five letters, with no emotional charge. "Bicycle" works. "Birthday" doesn't, if birthdays carry any stress. Then:

  1. Take the first letter of the word and picture something that starts with it. A brief, simple image is enough, no need to develop it into a scene.
  2. Hold that image for a few seconds, then move to the next letter and picture something new, completely unrelated to the first image.
  3. Continue through the letters of the word. When you run out, pick a new cue word and start again.
  4. If a real thought intrudes, a worry, a memory, a plan, don't fight it. Notice it without judgment and return to the images.

There's no fixed pace. Some people move through an image every five seconds, others take longer. The goal isn't speed, it's staying loosely occupied without giving the mind anything worth following.

Why It Works, and Where the Evidence Is Thin

Beaudoin's own framework, which he calls somnolent information processing theory, holds that goal-directed thinking, planning, problem-solving, worry, keeps the mind in an "insomnolent" state incompatible with sleep, while loose, associative, fragmented thought is "somnolent" and closer to how the mind naturally behaves as sleep approaches. Generating a stream of unrelated images is meant to occupy the mind with exactly that second kind of thinking. In a 2016 study, Beaudoin and colleagues randomly assigned 154 college students to a standard sleep-hygiene treatment, a formal version of the shuffling exercise called a serial diverse imagining task, or both. The group practicing the shuffling task showed improvements in sleep quality, difficulty falling asleep, and pre-sleep arousal.

It's worth being honest about the size of that evidence base. This is still a small number of studies, mostly from one research group, and the sample in the 2016 trial skewed toward college-aged women. That doesn't mean the technique doesn't work. It means it's a promising, low-risk method worth trying, not a heavily validated clinical treatment on the level of something like CBT-I.

When It Doesn't Work

Cognitive shuffling is built for generic mental busyness, the kind of racing mind that doesn't have a clear subject, just noise. It's a weaker fit for specific, nameable anxiety about a real problem, since generating random images does little to resolve an actual worry that needs addressing. For that kind of racing mind, a scheduled worry practice earlier in the day tends to work better.

It can also feel effortful for the first several nights. Generating images on demand is a skill, and like most skills it gets easier with repetition rather than working perfectly the first time.

Is cognitive shuffling backed by research? It's grounded in Beaudoin's own somnolent information processing theory and has been tested in a handful of studies, mostly by the technique's creator. It hasn't been evaluated in the large, independent randomized trials that back more established treatments, so it's reasonable to try it as a promising method rather than a proven one.

Does it work for anxiety-driven racing thoughts, or just general busy-mindedness? It's better suited to the latter. For anxiety-driven racing thoughts about a specific concern, a scheduled worry practice earlier in the day tends to address the problem more directly.

Bottom Line

Cognitive shuffling won't resolve a real worry, and it isn't a heavily studied clinical treatment. What it offers is a low-effort, low-risk way to occupy a mind that's simply busy without a subject, using a mechanism, disrupting a coherent train of thought, that's different from most relaxation techniques. Worth trying on a night when the problem is noise rather than a specific worry that needs its own attention.
